Ghost of Christmas Past

As we continue our study of A Christmas Carol we had a visit from the Ghost of Christmas Past today thanks to Mrs. Petrosky. Mr. Reed shared with us some great information as he discussed stave 2, The First of the Three Spirits.

Happy Thanksgiving

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. Remember that your next reading log check will be on December 6. You need to have read 15 or more steps between now and then.

Marley is dead!

Marley might be dead but Charles Dickens and Maria Beadnell lived today as Mr. Kurt Reed and Mrs. Michele Petrosky took on their roles in our official kick-off to "A Christmas Carol."

A Christmas Carol

We have begun our study of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. I am very excited with the unit. We will have Mr. Kurt Reed as a guest speaker during the study. There will be many activities and fun things to do. The novel may be used for our 100 book challenge.

Parent - Teacher Conferences

Don't forget that this coming Tuesday is Parent-Teacher Conference day. The entire 6th grade team would like to ask that you make every effort to be prompt for your conference. We have a full schedule of conferences for the afternoon and evening. Conferences are scheduled every ten minutes. If you requested a conference and are unable to attend please call the office.

Report Cards

Report Cards were sent home on Friday, November 12. Please return the cover with a parent's signature.

Parent - Teacher Conferences

The due date to register for Parent - Teacher Conferences has passed. Your conferences are tentatively scheduled. Those of you that requested a conference should receive notification of the time of your conference in the next few days.

Veteran's Day Assembly

Western Wayne Middle School will hold it annual Veteran's Day Assembly tomorrow (November 10, 2010). Please wear red, white, and blue to show your support for our Veterans.

1st Quarter Grades.

I must have all 1st Quarter grades posted by Wednesday of this week. All missing assignments and tests need to be made up by then.

School Book November 4

School Book is again down today. I'll keep you posted here when it is up and running.

Remember that tomorrow, Friday, November 5 is our first quarter social. If you wish bring in a health snack for our group to share.

Last Grade of the 1st Quarter

The check of the weekly reading logs on Monday, November 8 will be the final grade of the 1st Quarter. Make sure that you have completed all information necessary and have read 15 or more steps for the week.

School Book November 3

I have been notified that School Book access is down. I will let you know when it is on line again. Watch for future posts to update you on homework and upcoming tests.

End of the 1st Quarter

This Friday, November 5 our first quarter will end. The 15 step reading logs will be checked on Monday, November 8. This will be the final grade of the first quarter. I hope to see you all at parent conferences.

Homework and the 2nd quarter.

Some students have had a problem remembering to bring their reading logs to school especially on Monday when I collect them to check for completion. I have given one extra day to turn these in. Starting on day 46 of the school year I will not accept this or any homework late. (except for absence from school) This is more in line with other member of the 6th grade A team. However, at the beginning of each quarter, I will provide each student with 2 tickets. If a student forgets their homework or reading log they may return a ticket to me and I will give them one extra day to turn in the homework or reading log. They must have the ticket with them in class that day. The ticket will be collected and not be returned. Once a student no longer has a ticket I can not accept a late assignment. Unused tickets can be saved for a reward at the end of the year.

The test is three parts. Part 1 is vocabulary. See post below for study helps. Part 2 will be 5 multiple choice questions (comprehension) about the story. Part 3 will require an open ended response. Study please.

I have been told that School Book is up and running for everyone. I have updated grades as of this morning at 8:00 AM.

Due to a district wide technical issue, I was not able to update school book on Wednesday, October 20. Sorry for the incovenience. As soon as SB is up and running I will make those updates. I will notify you here once that happens.
I have been told that student and parent access is down also.

Matthew Henson at the Top of the World

This week and most of next week we will be working with the story of Matthew Henson at the Top of the World. Vocabulary words are challenging. Practice them often.

validate, surveyor, ardent, proposition, apt, tyranny, menial, deprivation, resentful and stamina. These will be on your text next week.

All American Slurp Test

October 14 is the day of the test. It will be one open ended question.

The Race is On!

It will not be long until our first A team reader reaches the finish line for 100 steps. Each student will receive a dog tag and pizza certificate. Will you be first?

Progress Reports

It is hard to believe that we have completed over 1/8th of the school year. Earlier this week we passes the half way point of the first quarter. I understand that progress reports were sent to the parents of those students who are in danger of failing the first quarter. Remember to check school book often for grades and assignments.

15 Steps - Due Monday

We still have our reading logs with 15 Steps completed due on Monday. We will have our Test on "Eleven" on Monday as well. Hope you all have a great long weekend.

100 Book Challenge - change

Starting on Monday students may use library books and books from home for the 15 required steps each week. Please note that any book from home must be approved by me before it can count.

Reading Test Friday, October 1

We will be having a reading test on the story, "Eleven" this Friday. The test is 10 questions. 5 multiple choice on the text. 1 open ended on the conflict in this story. 4 fill in the blank with vocabulary words. (a word bank will be provided) I suggest you study the vocabulary words as well as rereading the story thinking about the parts of the story including the conflict and resolution. Test grades should be available on school book on or before October 2.

Monday, September 27th Reading Logs

100 Book Challenge Reading Logs are due. 15 Steps need to be filled in completely with signatures. Each week this is a test grade. See side bar for rubric.

September 24th Class

Students do not need to bring large text book. They will need the Interactive Reader Plus workbook and their reading log / free reading book only. Photo of this text can be seen a few posts below.

100 Book Challenge Logs

Just a head ups for everyone. Each Monday I will check the reading logs for completion. 15 or more steps are expected to be filled out correctly with a signature on each line. This past week some students did not complete this. Check school book for the grades. This is a test grade. The best way to make sure you have this completed is to read two steps each night at home. This is your reading assignment anyway.

Text Book and Interactive Reader Plus

Today we received our Text and Interactive Reader Plus. Please make sure that you bring both to class every day. Don't forget to keep up with our 100 Book Challenge by reading two steps each night.

Reminder: Reading Logs

This is just a reminder that all Reading Logs for the 100 Book Challenge are due each Monday during reading class. The logs need to be filled out completely with a signature of a Reading Coach. The rubric for grading can be found along the right side of this page. Each step = 15 minutes of uninterrupted reading using one of the books from our colored bins. This counts as a reading test grade and will be recorded on School Book for your review.

Yippee! We have begun. Just a reminder that each week you must read 15 steps. A step is a chunk of reading (15 minutes). We will complete some of this in school - some must be completed at home. Your completed log sheets are due each Monday. Without this I can't give you credit. This counts as a test grade each week.

We began our people mobile in school today. This is an in school project. Bring photographs from home (optional) if you wish. We will complete this project on Friday, September 10. They will be on displayed for Open-House.
